Dekko and The Remarkablz

Some time ago I met Katy Alexander at a New Scientist Live event. It was there she began to tell me of an idea she had been working on. Katy wanted to take historically important female scientists and pioneers and turn them into superhero characters as a way of telling their stories in a fun and creative way. I instantly loved the idea; it would be such an original way of telling these incredible stories and bringing them to a wider audience. The women she picked would become members of a comic book cast called ‘The Remarkablz’.

As a start we collaborated on a 4-page comic called Katsuko, based on Japanese scientist Katsuko Saruhashi. Katy had ideas of what she wanted the comic to be like and from there I began to develop a comic book story from it. Dekko artist Fernando Corrales Linares and I began to create the artwork for the comic whilst Adam Hackers, another Dekko team member, created the speech bubbles. From that project we formed a collaborative partnership with Katy.

Using comics as a way of educating and inspiring people is what Dekko is all about. The Katsuko comic was a brilliantly fun, creative project to work on, while also encompassing an incredibly empowering message.  So, we agreed that if Katy could secure the funding to grow The Remarkablz and create a whole series of comics - then Dekko would absolutely be onboard to help bring them to life.

Fast forward to right now and Katy has started a Kickstarter funding campaign to get this big project off the ground going. At Dekko we are supporting her by helping raise awareness of the campaign. The funding will help with the production costs of such a big project and allow Dekko to throw its full creative force behind such a worthwhile mission.
